Welcome

Hello and welcome,

All paintings were made in the Unadilla River Valley of upstate New York. The county’s name is Chenango just a few miles west from where I grew up as a child. This area of the state is both an unknown and forgotten place by most people, including most New Yorkers.

My substrates are aluminum honey-combed celled panels, suspended by layers of fiberglass on both sides. This industrial material is most commonly used for aviation construction. I begin by treating the edges with a resin, then prime and paint the panel with oil. By using these types of materials, the paintings can withstand the rugged weather conditions that frequent upstate New York. The pieces are then left outside in the wilderness, on site, until they are completed. The paintings are not only a depiction of a particular place but are forced to interact with it as well.

Carved by a glacier many years ago, the river valley is ancient and no words can describe its mysterious enchantment, melancholy and splendor. I believe this current work conveys my reoccurring sense of wonderment and bounty, experienced in the landscape. Thank you for visiting and I appreciate your interest in my work.

Enjoy,

Marc Connor
